Here’s why we don’t offer unlimited space or bandwidth.

The simple fact is there is no such thing as unlimited disk space and bandwidth.

It just doesn’t exist. If you’ve ever purchased a computer before you know that you can only buy hard drives in certain sizes, none of which are unlimited. Think of servers as big computers that are stacked in racks. Although you can tie multiple servers together, there is only so much space in a rack. Eventually the space is going to run out.

Bandwidth isn’t any different. Bandwidth is the amount of traffic to and from your website. Bandwidth travels to and from servers via pipes of different sizes. Think of those pipes as “internet expressways.” No matter how many lanes one has on one of these “internet expressways,” there is only so munch information that can travel along it at any one time. So just like real expressways where if there are a lot of cars on the highway at once a traffic jam results, so too does it work on the “internet expressways.” Too much traffic caused by too many sites will cause a traffic bottleneck or even worse, a stop in network traffic causing your site to go offline or “time out.”

If that’s true, then why to so many of the “other guys” offer unlimited space and bandwidth?

Those terms are just marketing gimmicks as the “other guys” know that most clients won’t use that much space or bandwidth, so they roll the dice and hope for the best. Have you ever been bumped from a flight because the airline “oversold” it? Airlines oversell the capacity of their aircraft because they know that on most days and on most flights, not everyone who bought a ticket will show up. But every once in a while, they do, and because you can’t add any more seats to the plane, they have to “bump” some of their paying passengers. With the “other guys,” it’s a similar scenario. Because they are betting that their average customer won’t use all that space and bandwidth, they keep piling the customers onto the server until one actually tries to use what they were promised and causes the server to act up, slow down, and, in some cases, shut down entirely.

What does that mean for the customer?

As the “other guy” keeps on adding web sites to the server, piling them in like passengers in economy class on Thanksgiving weekend, your site begins to respond slower and slower until it crawls at a near standstill, or even worse, stops responding at all. Even if you don’t notice it at first, your site is still cramped with no legroom on a server that is being overworked because of the number of sites it holds. Eventually it will fail which will cause your site to suffer downtime as it is fixed or a new server is brought online.
